Purpose of the Raspberry Pi

"The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into a TV (or DVI monitor) and a keyboard, and can be used for "many of the things your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games," says the foundation, a registered British charity started with the goal of getting kids thinking about programming — and not just consuming content — on computers. "This is a tiny bit of kit aimed at getting hackable technology into the hands of anyone who can afford" it, noted The Register."
